A cover letter is your chance to explain why you are right for the role, with the goal of progressing your application and ideally securing an interview.
A cover letter gives you the space to explain why you’re the right match for the job and to increase your chances of being shortlisted for an interview. That’s why it’s important to make it impactful. So, what does a strong cover letter include? Here are a few basic tips to point you in the right direction.
1. Always submit a cover letter
If the application allows for a cover letter, make sure you include one. It’s a key opportunity to stand out and make a strong first impression on the recruiter.
2. Tailor it to the role
Resist the temptation to use the same generic letter for every job. A tailored letter shows that you’ve taken the time to understand the position and the company, and that your skills and experience are a good fit.
3. Grab attention from the start
Your opening should do more than repeat your resume or the job posting. Highlight the connection between your experience and the role, and let your personality come through. For example: “I live and breathe knitting, and I believe my enthusiasm and skills would make me an excellent addition to the Knitting & Knotting team.”
4. Do your homework
Research the company through its website, news, and social media to understand its values, culture, and challenges. Then, tie in your own experience in a relatable way: “As a single parent, I understand the challenge of finding reliable babysitters. Your platform has simplified this process, and I’d love to contribute to your innovative team.”
5. Emphasize problem-solving skills
Many roles, especially in tech, require the ability to solve problems effectively. Provide examples from your experience or industry knowledge to show this strength: “At Lentils-R-Us, I reduced labeling costs by 50%, a strategy I believe could benefit the team at BakedBeans-R-Us.”
6. Keep it concise
A strong cover letter is brief and focused—typically three paragraphs and no longer than one page. Skip lengthy introductions and get straight to the point so the reader can quickly see why you’re the right candidate.
